Polyps of the Colon and Rectum

Polyps are one of the most common problems affecting the colon and rectum, and occur in 15 to 20% of the adult population. Although most polyps are benign, it has being established a relationship between certain polyps and cancer.

There may be one or multiple polyps and they become more common as people get older.

There are usually no symptoms. However, patients can experience:

- Blood in stool
- Diarrhea (rare)
- Fatigue caused by blood loss over a period of time

Because colorectal polyps can evolve into cancer, they should be removed. In most cases, the polyps can be removed while performing a colonoscopy.
